Mauritius: The Ultimate Blend of Luxury and Adventure

If you’ve been dreaming of an island getaway that offers more than just a standard beach chair and a cocktail, let me introduce you to my absolute favourite Indian Ocean gem: Mauritius.

Now, don’t get me wrong, I love a good cocktail on a sun lounger as much as the next person. But what makes Mauritius so special, and why I find myself recommending it to my clients time and time again, is that it’s a bit of a "chameleon" destination. It can be the height of sophisticated luxury one minute and a rugged, heart-pumping adventure the next.

As your personaltravelconsultant, I’m always looking for those spots that offer a bit of everything, and Mauritius hits the nail on the head every single time. Whether you’re planning one of those once-in-a-lifetime honeymoons or looking for the ultimate destination for familyholidays, this island is waiting for you with open arms (and very warm water).

Why Mauritius is More Than Just a Pretty Face

Most people see photos of Mauritius and immediately think of the white sand and turquoise lagoons. And yes, they really are that blue! But if you stay solely on the beach, you’re missing out on half the magic.

The island is volcanic, which means it has this incredible, dramatic interior filled with jagged mountains, lush rainforests, and crashing waterfalls. You can spend your morning hiking through a national park and your afternoon being pampered in a world-class spa. It’s that contrast that makes tailor made travel to Mauritius so exciting, we can build an itinerary that perfectly balances "go-go-go" with "slow-slow-slow."

The Height of Luxury: Where to Stay

When it comes to high-end resorts, Mauritius is arguably the leader in the Indian Ocean. The hospitality here isn't just service; it’s an art form.

If you’re looking for total seclusion and that "wow" factor, the St. Regis Mauritius Resort (now the JW Marriott) on the Le Morne Peninsula is stunning. It’s set against the backdrop of the iconic Le Morne Brabant mountain, a UNESCO World Heritage site. Imagine waking up in an all-suite resort where your private butler is ready to handle everything from unpacking your bags to booking your dinner reservations.

For those who want something a bit more boutique and eco-conscious, Lakaz Chamarel is nestled in the mountains. It’s perfect if you want to swap the sound of waves for the sound of tropical birds. Then you have the heavy hitters like Shangri-La Le Touessrok and LUX Grand Gaube*, which are basically the gold standard for luxury. These resorts don’t just offer a room; they offer an experience: think private islands for picnics, world-class golf courses, and spas that make you feel like a completely new person.

Adventure is Calling: From the Mountains to the Sea

If you’re the type of person who gets restless after two days on a sunbed, Mauritius has your back.

Land Adventures

Hiking the Black River Gorges National Park is a must. There are over 60km of trails, and the views across the island are spectacular. You’ll see wild monkeys, rare birds like the Pink Pigeon, and some of the most beautiful waterfalls you’ve ever laid eyes on.

And we can’t talk about Mauritius without mentioning Chamarel. The "Seven Coloured Earths" are a natural phenomenon where the sand dunes are striped in shades of purple, red, violet, and green. It looks like something from another planet! While you’re there, make sure to stop by the Chamarel Rhumerie for a taste of the local agricultural rum: it’s delicious (but strong!).

Water Sports

The lagoons are protected by a coral reef, making the water calm and perfect for sports. Mauritius is world-renowned for kitesurfing, especially at One Eye in Le Morne. If you’re a beginner, the lagoons are shallow and safe, but if you’re a pro, the waves outside the reef are legendary.

I also highly recommend a catamaran excursion. There’s nothing quite like sailing across the crystal-clear water, stopping to snorkel with tropical fish, and having a BBQ lunch cooked on the boat. If you’re lucky, you might even spot dolphins or migrating whales along the coast.

Perfect for Honeymoons: Romance Reimagined

For honeymoons, Mauritius offers a level of romance that’s hard to beat. Because the island is so diverse, you don’t feel "trapped" in a resort. You can have a private candlelit dinner on the beach one night and go on a sunset quad bike safari the next.

Many of the resorts offer specific honeymoon perks: think couples' massages, flower-petal baths, and sunset cruises. When I help couples plan their #honeymoons, I love finding those little boutique spots or hidden villas that offer that extra bit of privacy. It’s about creating those "pinch-me" moments that you’ll still be talking about on your 50th anniversary.

Family Holidays: Fun for All Ages

You might think an island this beautiful is just for couples, but Mauritius is actually incredible for familyholidays. Most resorts have kids' clubs that are honestly better than some schools! They don’t just sit the kids in front of a TV; they take them glass-bottom boating, teaching them about local crafts, and organizing treasure hunts.

The beaches are generally safe for little ones because of the reef protection, and the flight (while long) is often overnight from the UK, meaning the kids can sleep most of the way. Plus, there’s only a small time difference, so you don’t have to deal with the dreaded toddler jet lag for a week!

A Taste of the Island: Food and Culture

One of the things I love most about Mauritius is the culture. It’s a vibrant mix of Indian, Creole, Chinese, and French influences, and you can taste it in the food.

Don't spend your whole time eating in the resort restaurants (even though they are amazing). Get out and try some street food! Grab some Dholl Puri (a savory pancake filled with yellow split peas) from a local vendor in Port Louis. Visit the local markets and soak up the sights and smells of fresh vanilla, spices, and tropical fruits. The people of Mauritius are some of the friendliest I’ve ever met, and their "Joie de Vivre" is totally infectious.
