Hola! It’s Sarah Williams here, your Personal Travel Consultant. If you’re starting to dream about your next sunshine getaway and want a destination that genuinely has something for everyone, you need to put the Costa Dorada at the top of your list.

Known as the "Golden Coast" thanks to its miles of shimmering, honey-hued sands, this stretch of the Spanish coastline is one of my absolute favourite places to recommend. Whether you’re a family looking for adrenaline-pumping theme parks, a couple seeking a romantic seaside stroll, or a group of friends hunting for the best tapas in Catalonia, the Costa Dorada delivers.

In this guide, I’m diving deep into Salou: the vibrant heart of the region: and showing you why this area is a top-tier choice for your next #familyholidays or a bespoke #tailormadetravel escape.

Getting There: Easy Peasy Transfers

One of the best things about a holiday to the Costa Dorada is how stress-free the travel is. You actually have two great options when it comes to flying in:

  1. Reus Airport (REU): This is the ultimate "shortcut." Reus is a small, friendly airport located just 10 to 15 minutes away from Salou. You can literally step off the plane, grab your bags, and be jumping into the pool at your hotel within the hour. It’s perfect for families who want to skip long coach transfers.

  2. Barcelona-El Prat (BCN): If you prefer more flight flexibility or want to combine your beach break with a city stay, flying into Barcelona is a brilliant move. Salou is roughly 100km south of Barcelona, which translates to a very manageable 1 hour to 1.5 hours by car or private transfer. Even better, there’s a direct train from Barcelona Sants station that takes you right into the heart of Salou, offering some lovely coastal views along the way.

As your #personaltravelconsultant, I can arrange whichever works best for your schedule: whether that’s a quick hop from Reus or a scenic drive from the Catalan capital.

Salou: The Hub of the Golden Coast

Salou is the undisputed king of the Costa Dorada. It’s a town that manages to be both high-energy and incredibly welcoming. If you’ve never been, think of it as a place where the Mediterranean lifestyle meets modern holiday convenience.

The Beaches: Llevant and Ponent

The star of the show is Platja de Llevant. It’s the main beach, stretching over a kilometre with soft, golden sand and shallow, turquoise water: making it incredibly safe for little ones. Parallel to the beach is the Passeig Jaume I, a stunning, palm-lined promenade. Walking down this path in the evening, with the sea breeze on one side and the fountains lit up on the other, is a quintessential Salou experience.

If you’re looking for something slightly quieter but still close to the action, head over to Platja de Ponent. It’s just as beautiful but often feels a little more local and chilled out.

PortAventura World: The Ultimate Family Adventure

You can’t talk about Salou without mentioning PortAventura World. For many of my clients, this is the main reason they book #familyholidays here, and it’s easy to see why. It’s not just a theme park; it’s an entire world of entertainment.

The resort is split into three main areas:

  • PortAventura Park: Divided into themed lands like Mediterrània, Polynesia, China, Mexico, the Far West, and SésamoAventura (for the tiny travellers). It’s home to legendary coasters like Shambhala and Dragon Khan.

  • Ferrari Land: A must for speed demons. It’s home to Red Force, the tallest and fastest vertical accelerator in Europe. Trust me, it’s a rush!

  • Caribe Aquatic Park: A massive Caribbean-themed water park with slides, lazy rivers, and wave pools. It’s the perfect place to cool down when the Spanish sun is at its peak.

Pro tip from your consultant: If you're staying in Salou, you can easily spend multiple days here. I often suggest getting a multi-day pass so you don’t feel the need to rush through everything in 24 hours.

Walking the Cami de Ronda

If you want to see a different side of Salou: one that’s a bit more rugged and natural: you have to walk the Cami de Ronda. This coastal path was once used by smugglers and sailors, but today it’s a beautifully restored walkway that hugs the cliffs.

Starting near the harbour, the path takes you past hidden coves like Cala Llenguadets and Cala Font. The further you walk towards Cap Salou, the more the crowds thin out. It’s the best way to find those "secret" swimming spots that feel a world away from the main resort. It’s also the prime spot for watching the sunset over the Mediterranean: don't forget your camera!

Beyond Salou: Hidden Gems of the Costa Dorada

While Salou has plenty to keep you busy, part of the joy of #tailormadetravel is exploring the local area. There are two spots just a stone’s throw away that I always insist my clients visit.

Cambrils: The Foodie’s Paradise

Just a few minutes down the coast (you can even walk or cycle there from Salou!) is Cambrils. If Salou is the fun-loving sibling, Cambrils is the sophisticated one. It’s a traditional fishing village that has evolved into a culinary hotspot.

The harbour is lined with incredible seafood restaurants where the "catch of the day" really was caught that morning. It has a much more relaxed, "slow-living" vibe. Strolling through the Old Town with its narrow streets and flower-filled balconies is a lovely way to spend an afternoon before settling down for a massive pan of authentic Paella.

Tarragona: A Step Back in Time

For the history buffs, a trip to Tarragona is non-negotiable. Located just 15 minutes away, this UNESCO World Heritage city was once one of the most important outposts of the Roman Empire.

The highlight is the Roman Amphitheatre, which is uniquely situated right on the edge of the sea. You can walk through the ruins where gladiators once fought, all while looking out over the blue Mediterranean. The city’s Gothic cathedral and the ancient city walls are also spectacular. It’s a perfect day trip to add some culture to your beach holiday.

Why Salou is Perfect for You

I’m often asked who Salou is best for, and honestly, its versatility is its biggest strength.

  • For Families: With PortAventura, safe beaches, and child-friendly restaurants everywhere, it is stress-free.

  • For Couples: You can enjoy the nightlife of Salou, the romantic dining in Cambrils, and the history of Tarragona.

  • For Active Travellers: Between the coastal hiking paths, water sports, and nearby golf courses, you’ll never be bored.
