If you’re looking for a destination that perfectly balances "I want to lie on a sun lounger all day" with "I want to explore 2,000-year-old ruins," then let me introduce you to Side. Pronounced See-deh, this stunning harbour town on Turkey’s Mediterranean coast is one of my absolute favourite spots to recommend.
As we look ahead to the 2026 season, Side is more popular than ever, and for good reason. It’s one of the few places in the world where you can walk through a Roman gateway to get to a modern boutique, or enjoy a cocktail while looking out at a temple built for a Greek god. Whether you’re planning a romantic getaway or a fun-filled family holiday, here is everything you need to know about Side.
Why Side Should Be on Your 2026 Travel List
Side isn’t just your average resort town. It’s actually an ancient port city that dates back to the 7th century BC. What makes it so special is that the "Old Town" (Antik Kent) is literally built among the ruins. You’ll find glass floors in some of the shops and restaurants where you can peer down at ancient foundations while you browse for souvenirs.
Beyond the history, you’ve got miles of golden sand, some of the best all-inclusive resorts in Turkey, and a hospitality culture that is second to none.
Getting There and Getting Around
Most of my clients fly into Antalya Airport (AYT). It’s a major hub with plenty of flights from across the UK. From the airport, Side is about an hour’s drive (65km).
Top Tip: I always recommend booking a private transfer. After a flight, the last thing you want is a two-hour coach journey stopping at ten different hotels. A private car is surprisingly affordable in Turkey and gets your holiday started much faster!
Once you’re in Side, the dolmuş (local minibus) is your best friend. They are cheap, frequent, and run between the major resort areas like Kumköy and Sorgun and the Old Town.
The Best Areas to Stay
Choosing where to stay in Side depends on the "vibe" you’re after. Here’s a quick breakdown:
1. Side Old Town (Antik Kent)
If you love being in the heart of the action, stay here. You’ll find charming boutique hotels tucked away in narrow streets. You’re steps away from the harbour and the best restaurants, but keep in mind there aren't many large pools or big resort facilities here.
2. West Beach / Kumköy
This is the "classic" Side holiday. It’s home to some of the most luxurious 5-star all-inclusive resorts. The beaches here are wide, sandy, and the water stays shallow for a long way out, making it the number one choice for families with young children.
3. Sorgun / East Beach
If you want something a bit quieter and more "natural," Sorgun is beautiful. It’s famous for its pine forests that run right down to the sea. The resorts here tend to be spread out and offer a bit more privacy: perfect for couples or those looking for a high-end wellness retreat.

A Step Back in Time: The Must-See Ruins
You can’t visit Side without seeing the sights. The best part? Many of them are free to walk around!
The Temple of Apollo
This is the "Instagram" shot of Side. Situated right on the tip of the peninsula overlooking the sea, these towering white columns are all that remain of a temple dedicated to the god of light and music.
Pro Tip: Go at sunset. The way the light hits the marble with the Mediterranean in the background is genuinely breathtaking.
The Roman Theatre
This is one of the largest ancient theatres in Turkey, once seating up to 20,000 people. It’s remarkably well-preserved. You can walk up into the stands and get a real sense of what it was like to watch a gladiator fight or a play two millennia ago.
The Side Museum
Housed in a restored Roman bathhouse, this museum is small but mighty. It’s filled with incredible statues and sarcophagi found right here in the city. It’s a great way to escape the midday heat for an hour.
Life’s a Beach
Side is blessed with two main stretches of coastline:
West Beach: This is the livelier of the two. It’s lined with beach clubs and hotels. If you like water sports: parasailing, jet skis, or banana boats: this is the place to be.
East Beach: A bit more rugged and peaceful. You’ll find fewer crowds here, and some of the ruins actually spill out onto the dunes. It’s a lovely spot for a long afternoon walk.

Hidden Gems and Day Trips
If you can tear yourself away from the pool, there is so much to see nearby:
Manavgat Waterfall: Just a 15-minute drive inland. It’s not a high drop, but it’s very wide and powerful. There are lovely shaded tea gardens where you can sit with your feet in the cool water.
The Green Canyon: Take a boat trip on the Oymapinar Dam. The water is a bright emerald green, surrounded by steep cliffs. Most tours include lunch and a chance to swim in the fresh water.
The Ancient City of Lyrbe: If you want ruins without the crowds, head into the mountains to Lyrbe (sometimes called Seleucia). It’s hidden in a pine forest and you’ll often have the whole place to yourself.
Practical Tips for Your Side Holiday
Money Matters
The currency is the Turkish Lira (TRY). While many places in Side accept Euros or Pounds, you’ll usually get a better deal if you pay in Lira. Top Tip: Avoid carrying loads of cash. Use a Hays Travel Money Card. It’s safe, secure, and you can manage everything via an app. Just tap and go!

What to Pack
Comfy Shoes: Side’s Old Town has uneven, ancient cobblestones. Your flip-flops might struggle!
Sunscreen: The Turkish sun in July and August is no joke.
Modest Dress: If you plan on visiting the nearby mosques in Manavgat, remember to cover your shoulders and knees.
When to Go
For the best balance of weather and crowds, I recommend May, June, or September. July and August are fantastic if you love the heat (it often hits 35-40°C), but it can be very busy. If you’re a history buff who wants to hike and explore, the mild weather in April or October is perfect.
