Santorini: More Than Just Blue Domes

When you close your eyes and think of Greece, I’d bet my bottom dollar that you’re picturing Santorini. Those iconic white-washed buildings clinging to the cliffs, the deep blue Aegean Sea, and, of course, those famous blue domes. It’s the ultimate "postcard-perfect" destination. But as a personal travel consultant, I’m here to tell you that if you only visit for the Instagram shots, you’re missing out on about 90% of what makes this volcanic island so incredible.

From its ancient archaeological sites and rugged hiking trails to its unique volcanic wines and hidden medieval villages, Santorini is an island of layers. Whether you’re planning one of those dream honeymoons, thinking about destinationweddings, or just looking for a luxury escape, there is so much more to discover once you step away from the crowds in Oia.

Getting There and When to Go

First things first: the logistics. One of the best things about Santorini is how accessible it is. From the UK, you’re looking at a flight time of approximately 4 to 5 hours. It’s just long enough to feel like you’re heading somewhere exotic, but short enough that you won't spend your whole first day recovering from jet lag.

Now, timing is everything. While Santorini is a sun-drenched dream in July and August, it can get incredibly busy and quite hot. If you want my expert advice, I always recommend the shoulder seasons. May to June and September to October are the sweet spots. During these months, the weather is still gloriously warm, but the crowds are thinner, and the prices for those high-end boutique hotels are a bit more reasonable. Plus, you won't have to fight quite so hard for that perfect sunset view!

The Hike You Can’t Miss: Fira to Oia

If you do one active thing while you're on the island, make it the hike from Fira to Oia. It’s easily one of the most beautiful walks in the world. The trail winds along the edge of the caldera, offering jaw-dropping views of the volcanic crater and the sea below.

The walk takes about 3 to 4 hours depending on how many times you stop for photos (and believe me, you’ll stop a lot). Along the way, you’ll pass through the charming villages of Firostefani and Imerovigli.

A little pro tip from me: keep an eye out for Skaros Rock. This massive black lava promontory was once the site of a medieval fortress and the island’s capital. If you’re feeling adventurous, you can hike out onto the rock itself for a perspective of the island that most tourists never see. It’s rugged, dramatic, and a great reminder of Santorini’s fiery volcanic past.

Step Back in Time: Akrotiri and Ancient Thera

Santorini isn't just a pretty face; it has a history that stretches back thousands of years. If you’re a bit of a history buff like me, you have to visit Akrotiri.

Often called the "Minoan Pompeii," Akrotiri was a thriving Bronze Age settlement that was buried in volcanic ash during a massive eruption around 1600 BC. Because of the ash, the site is incredibly well-preserved. You can walk through the ancient streets and see multi-story buildings and intricate drainage systems that were way ahead of their time. It’s all undercover now, too, so it’s a great way to escape the midday sun.

For even more history, head up to Ancient Thera. Perched high on Messa Vouno mountain, these ruins offer a mix of Greek, Roman, and Byzantine history. The climb (or drive) up is worth it for the views alone, looking down over the black sand beaches of Kamari and Perissa.

A Different Kind of Beach Day

Speaking of beaches, don't expect the soft white sands of the Caribbean here. Santorini is volcanic, which means the beaches are a bit more... colourful!

• The Red Beach: Famous for its towering red cliffs and dark pebbles, it looks like something from another planet.

• The Black Sand Beaches: Kamari and Perissa are the most popular, with long stretches of volcanic sand and crystal-clear water.

• The White Beach: Accessible only by boat, this small cove is surrounded by striking white limestone cliffs.

While the beaches are stunning, my favourite way to experience the Aegean is from the water. I always suggest my clients book a sunset catamaran cruise. There’s nothing quite like sailing into the caldera, stopping for a swim in the volcanic hot springs at Palea Kameni, and then watching the sun dip below the horizon while enjoying a fresh Greek barbecue on deck. It’s pure magic and a must for any tailor made travel itinerary.

Sips and Bites: The Volcanic Vineyard

You can’t visit Santorini without trying the wine. Because of the island’s unique volcanic soil and windy climate, the grapes are grown in a very unusual way, in low, basket-shaped coils called koulara to protect them from the elements.

The star of the show is Assyrtiko, a crisp, mineral-heavy white wine that pairs perfectly with fresh seafood. There are some fantastic wineries scattered across the island, particularly around the village of Pyrgos. Spending an afternoon doing a wine tasting as the sun begins to set is a highlight of any trip.

And the food? Oh, the food! Don't just stick to gyros (though they are delicious). Look for local specialties like fava (a creamy yellow split pea puree) and tomatokeftedes (tomato fritters made with the island’s famous sun-dried cherry tomatoes).

Romance and Celebrations

It’s no secret that Santorini is one of the most romantic places on earth. It’s a top-tier destination for honeymoons, and for good reason. Imagine waking up in a cave suite with your own private infinity pool overlooking the caldera: it doesn't get much better than that!

While everyone flocks to Oia for the sunset, I recommend spending some time in the "quiet" villages. Pyrgos is a personal favourite of mine. It’s the highest village on the island and feels like a hidden world of winding alleys, hidden cafes, and panoramic views.

Another hidden gem is Emporeio. This medieval village features narrow, fortress-like streets designed to confuse pirates back in the day. It’s incredibly atmospheric and feels a world away from the tourist hubs.
