Rhodes has always been one of my absolute favourite Greek islands to recommend to clients, and honestly, once you visit, you'll understand why! This stunning Dodecanese island perfectly blends ancient history with gorgeous beaches, medieval charm with modern luxury, and authentic Greek culture with fantastic family-friendly activities. Whether you're planning a romantic getaway, family holiday, or solo adventure, Rhodes has something magical waiting for you.
Getting There & Essential Info
Flight Times from the UK: Direct flights from major UK airports take around 4 hours, with budget airlines like easyJet and Ryanair offering the most affordable options. Expect to pay £150-400 return depending on the season and how far in advance you book.
Time Difference: Rhodes is 2 hours ahead of the UK, so perfect for those who struggle with jet lag!
Best Time to Visit: I always tell my clients that June and September are absolute gold for Rhodes. The weather's gorgeous (25-28°C), the crowds are manageable, and everything's still open. July and August are peak season – stunning weather but expect higher prices and busier attractions.
Getting Around Rhodes
Here's my honest take: rent a car if you want to see the real Rhodes. The island's only 50 miles long, but there's so much to explore beyond the main tourist spots. Car rental starts from about £20 per day, and the freedom to discover hidden beaches and mountain villages is worth every penny.
If driving isn't your thing, the local bus system is decent for reaching major attractions like Lindos, and taxis are readily available (though they can add up quickly for longer journeys).

Must-See Highlights
Medieval Rhodes Old Town
This UNESCO World Heritage site is absolutely mind-blowing – and I'm not just saying that because it's good for business! Walking through those ancient cobblestone streets feels like stepping back 600 years. The Palace of the Grand Master is spectacular (entry around €6), and the Street of the Knights is one of the best-preserved medieval streets in Europe.
Top tip: Visit early morning or late afternoon to avoid crowds and get the best photos. The Archaeological Museum (€3 entry) houses incredible ancient artifacts, including the famous Aphrodite of Rhodes statue.
Lindos and the Acropolis
About 55km from Rhodes Town, Lindos is picture-postcard perfect. The ancient Acropolis perched high above the azure bay is breathtaking – though be prepared for a steep climb! Entry costs around €12, but the views are priceless.
The village itself is gorgeous, with whitewashed houses and narrow alleys packed with local shops and tavernas. St. Paul's Bay below is perfect for a refreshing swim after exploring the ruins.

Beaches You Can't Miss
Anthony Quinn Bay: Named after the famous actor, this small cove has incredibly clear turquoise water. Gets busy, so arrive early!
Tsambika Beach: Golden sand stretches for miles, plus there's a monastery on the hilltop for panoramic views.
Kallithea Springs: A unique spot where thermal springs meet the sea, with beautiful Art Deco architecture from the Italian period.
Faliraki Beach: Great for families with shallow waters and tons of beach bars and water sports.
Valley of the Butterflies
From June to September, thousands of butterflies (actually moths!) gather in this magical valley. It's a lovely 30-minute walk through shaded paths – perfect when you need a break from the beach. Entry is about €5.
Family-Friendly Activities
Rhodes is absolutely brilliant for families! Here are my top recommendations:
Water Parks: Faliraki Water Park is the biggest and best – kids will love the slides while parents can relax. Day passes cost around €24 for adults, €16 for children.
Rhodes Aquarium: Perfect for a rainy day or when little ones need air conditioning. Small but interesting marine life displays for about €5.50.
Mini Train Tours: Kids love these! They run from Mandraki Harbour to various attractions around Rhodes Town (around €5-8).
Glass-Bottom Boat Trips: Explore the coastline and see underwater life without getting wet. Trips start from about €15-20.

Local Food & Dining Costs
The food in Rhodes is incredible – fresh seafood, traditional Greek dishes, and some Italian influences from the Dodecanese history.
Budget Eats (€5-12 per person):
Souvlaki and gyros from local tavernas
Fresh bread and local cheese from bakeries
Beachside snack bars

Mezze plates perfect for sharing

Fresh seafood including swordfish and sea bream
Local wines from Rhodes vineyards
Honey and almond sweets
Day Trip Ideas
Ancient Kamiros: Explore remarkably well-preserved ancient Greek ruins without the crowds. Entry around €6.
Symi Island: Take a day boat trip to this gorgeous nearby island with colorful harbor houses. Full-day trips start from €25-35.
Seven Springs (Epta Piges): A natural oasis with peacocks, springs, and a small lake. Great for families and nature lovers.
Typical Costs Breakdown
Daily Budget (per person):
Budget traveler: €40-60 (including accommodation, food, transport)
Mid-range: €80-120
Luxury: €150+
Activities:
Museum entries: €3-12
Boat trips: €15-40

Essential Tips
What to Pack: Comfortable walking shoes for cobblestones, reef-safe sunscreen (protect those beautiful waters!), and a light jacket for evenings.
Money Matters: Most places accept cards, but carry some cash for smaller tavernas and beach bars. ATMs are widely available.
Cultural Etiquette: Greeks are wonderfully welcoming! A simple "Kalimera" (good morning) or "Yasou" (hello) goes a long way.
Photography: The Old Town is incredibly photogenic, but be respectful in religious sites and ask before photographing locals.
